Banish Those Thick Yellow Toenails Before Sandal Season
The winter boots are finally going back in the closet, but for many in Jersey City, the thought of going barefoot is stressful. It’s a common scenario for those with toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis.
Toenail fungus affects 35 to 40 million Americans and is among the most common reasons patients visit a podiatrist. At Tjoe Podiatry in Jersey City, N.J., board-certified podiatric surgeon Edward Tjoe, DPM, routinely treats thick, yellow, or brittle toenails at his Jersey City, N.J., practice.
He achieves remarkable results with the revolutionary Lunula Laser technology.
Toenail fungus 101
Toenail fungus occurs when microscopic organisms enter the nail bed, usually through small cuts or the tiny space between your nail and toe. These organisms thrive in damp, dark environments, such as gym locker rooms or sweaty shoes.
Because the fungus lives under the nail, it is notoriously difficult to treat with over-the-counter topicals alone.
Laser treatment
The Lunula Laser uses low-level laser light to target onychomycosis. The laser light passes through the toenail to reach the fungus living underneath. It destroys fungal cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue intact. This process is quick, pain-free, has no downtime or side effects, and requires only 12-minute treatment sessions. Dr. Tjoe may recommend multiple sessions depending on the severity of your toenail fungus.
Traditional treatments
Toenail fungus was once treated exclusively with prescription medications. These treatments generally fall into two categories: oral antifungal pills and high-strength topical solutions.
Oral medications: These help a new nail grow in free of infection by slowly replacing the infected part. While generally effective, these medications must be taken daily for 12 weeks. And, because they can affect the liver, you need blood tests before and during treatment to ensure your liver enzymes remain at healthy levels.
Also, some patients experience headaches, skin rashes, or a temporary change in their sense of taste.
Prescription topicals: These have fewer side effects but are less effective because the liquid is difficult to penetrate deeply into the nail bed.
Keeping your feet fungus-free
Treating the infection is only the first step. Preventing it from coming back is just as important. We recommend several habits to keep your feet healthy:
- Wear moisture-wicking socks to keep feet dry
- Rotate your shoes daily so they can air out completely
- Use antifungal sprays inside your footwear
- Avoid going barefoot in public pools or showers
- Keep your toenails trimmed short and straight across
The fungus won't disappear overnight because the damaged nail has to grow out. A new toenail takes about 6 to 12 months to fully replace the old one.
