Toenail fungus is both unsightly and, if left untreated, uncomfortable. However, getting to the bottom of the cause of toenail fungus can help you understand its treatments and how your podiatrist can help. Find out more about toenail fungus, what causes it, and its Toenail Fungustreatments with Dr. Edward Tjoe at Tjoe Podiatry in Jersey City, NJ.

What causes toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus comes from microscopic fungal spores entering the skin and settling under the nail. The foot is a perfect environment for fungi to grow as it is often dark and moist. Those who are at a higher risk for toenail fungus include people who frequent places like locker rooms or public pools and do not wear shower shoes in the moist areas. These are the perfect breeding grounds for toenail fungus, which is transferred from person to person by direct contact.

Do I have toenail fungus?
The first sign of toenail fungus is often a small white or yellow dot on the nail. As the condition advances, its symptoms become more obvious. Some of the common signs of toenail fungus include:

  • brittle or crumbling nails
  • yellowed nails
  • thickened nails
  • white or yellow streaks on the nail
  • nails which pull away from the nail bed
  • flaking which causes pits on the nail
  • loss of the nail altogether

How can my podiatrist help my toenail fungus?
Your doctor will examine your foot and nails to determine the level of severity of your toenail fungus and base your treatment on the stage of the condition. Sometimes, over-the-counter or prescription fungal creams or lacquers are enough to treat toenail fungus. However, some patients with a more advanced condition may require laser therapy with the Q-Clear laser system or even surgical removal of the nail. Your podiatrist can help you determine the best treatment option for you.
